Gameplay Balance & Design

My main responsibilities concerning design were centered in aiding to establish proper identities for each weapon, emphasizing the strengths and exposing the presumed weaknesses of each weapon whilst allowing player’s to express themselves and their unique playstyles developed over the course of the game’s lifespan. Two goals were meant to be achieved through this work

1) Helping the game to stay faithful to the game’s inspiration by maintaining true to the show’s combat pacing
2) Aid new player retention through easing the fall-off of new sword players as they improved (these players accounted for 70-80% of all newer players).

Emphasizing the strengths and weaknesses of weapons meant compensating for the omni-directional, quick-paced movement by allowing the weapons to express themselves via reactibility or predictability in their offensive capabilities relative to their risk-reward (gauging effective range, utilizing universal mechanics, etc.)
